Home Ed Group – Forest Fun & Learning
This weekly group runs every Thursday during term time and is aimed at home-educated children aged five and over.
As well as following the Forest School principle of facilitating child-led learning and discovery, on some weeks the sessions will have a specific theme, for example green woodworking and other woodland/natural crafts, which are led by masters in their field. We also aim to undertake one major project during each term, like building a cob oven, round house or other similar structures. Of course, this is all mixed with a good dose of free play, games and general child-led fun and adventure.
General activities on offer from week to week include:
- Environmental art
- Woodland crafts & games
- Campfire cooking
- Free play
Based at one of our establish woodland camps, complete with large group shelters and fire pits, these days offer an exciting opportunity to play, learn and make new friends, whatever the weather!
What are the Benefits?
Outdoor learning is being increasingly recognised as playing an integral role in holistic child development. Benefits include improved:
- physical and motors skills
- language and communication skills
- social skills, including team work
- knowledge and understanding of the environment
- self-esteem and self-confidence
- motivation and concentration
At Hidden Woods, some of the hard skills that children gain are an improved knowledge of the natural world, an understanding of appropriate use of tools and risk management skills, bushcraft and survival knowledge, environmental arts and crafts. We also very much focus on soft skills such as co-operation, sharing, empathy and the development of emotional language.
The group runs every Thursday during term time, starting at 9.30am and finishing at 3.30pm.The price for individual days is £30 per child. However, if booking for all sessions within a term, the price is £25 per session. To book an individual day please click here. To purchase a pre-paid pass for the whole term, please click here. Once the pass has been purchased you’ll then need to allocate that to each of the days within the term (or contact us and we can do that for you).
As a wise woodsman once said, there is no such thing as bad weather, just inappropriate clothing! Our sessions will go ahead in all but the most extreme weathers, so if it’s just a bit drizzly or windy on the day please dress for the occasion and come on down! We have large group shelters at all of our camps and can also evacuate to our Base Camp (which has a large A-frame shelter away from the big trees) if it’s too windy to be under the forest canopy.
